What an opener actually does
It doesn't have to be your funniest line — that one comes later. It has to do three small things:
- Get people to stop talking and look up.
- Show you're in control of the room.
- Promise them the speech is going to be worth the next five minutes.
Five formats that always work
- The promise-and-pivot. Promise not to say something, then immediately gesture at it.
- The cold open. One sharp sentence about the groom/bride before any preamble.
- The honest landing. Admit a real thing about how you feel right now.
- The specific detail. A tiny, true observation only you would notice.
- The toast forward. Open by hinting at what you're going to toast at the end.

FAQs
What makes a good opening line?
+
It earns the room's attention in one sentence. Either it's funny, it's surprising, or it's specific enough that only you could have said it.
Should I open with a joke?
+
Only if the joke is actually yours and actually good. A weak opening joke is worse than a sincere first line.
What openers should I avoid?
+
'For those of you who don't know me…', 'I'll keep this short…', 'According to Google…', and any quote from a famous person you don't actually know.
How long should the opener be?
+
One or two sentences. You're earning permission to speak — not delivering the speech yet.
Do I have to be funny?
+
No. Sincere openers land just as well, sometimes better. Pick what suits you and the room.
